Choosing the right diet?
The healthy balance
In order to function properly, the body requires energy and a variety of nutrients including proteins, vitamins and minerals.
No single food contains all the essential nutrients your body requires, so it is important that you consume a wide variety of foods.
A balanced diet is important because it can help you maintain a healthy body weight, enhance your general well-being and reduce your risk of a number of diseases including heart disease, stroke, cancer, diabetes and osteoporosis (weakening of the bones). A balanced diet is even more important when you exercise regularly because it can help you improve your performance.
You don't have to give up the foods you love, such as chocolate and chips, but remember that everything you eat, including snacks, counts towards the balance of your diet.
The government has put forward 8 guidelines for a healthy diet. By following these guidelines, you'll be well on your way to a healthy lifestyle.
